Winter Break 2026-27 Family Trip Ideas: Warm Escapes, Snow Days and When to Book
Winter break 2026-27 family trip ideas, from Hawaii whale season to Yellowstone snow, plus the best time to book Christmas flights and how to plan around the holidays.

Winter break has a funny way of sneaking up on parents. One minute it's Halloween costume shopping, the next it's mid-December and every flight home from grandma's costs more than the turkey. If you've been thinking about a family trip over the holidays this year, the good news is that early October is right about the perfect time to plan it.
This year the calendar is friendly. Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, and so does New Year's Day 2027, which means the holidays line up neatly with two long weekends. Here are the trip ideas we keep coming back to, sorted into "warm" and "snowy," plus the booking timing that helps you get there without overpaying.
When to book: the window is opening now
Holiday airfare isn't a mystery, but it does have a rhythm. Google's analysis of four years of Google Flights data found that Christmas fares were lowest about 51 days before departure, with a low-price range of 32 to 73 days out. Count back from a few likely departure dates:
| If you leave on | About 51 days before | Low-price range (32 to 73 days out) |
|---|---|---|
| Friday, Dec. 18, 2026 | Oct. 28 | Oct. 6 to Nov. 16 |
| Saturday, Dec. 19, 2026 | Oct. 29 | Oct. 7 to Nov. 17 |
| Monday, Dec. 21, 2026 | Oct. 31 | Oct. 9 to Nov. 19 |
These are historical averages, not guarantees, but the takeaway is clear: start watching fares now and aim to book by mid-November. For international trips, the same analysis found the lowest prices came 49 days or more before departure, so earlier is better. Google's data also showed that flights on Monday through Wednesday averaged about 13 percent cheaper than weekend flights.
A few more timing tips:
- Hotels and vacation rentals near popular holiday spots fill early. Book a refundable room now, then keep watching.
- Check passports today if your trip leaves the country. Look up current processing times on the State Department's passport site before you book anything nonrefundable.
- Watch the total price. Since May 12, 2025, the FTC's rule on hotel and rental fees requires that the price shown up front include required fees like resort and cleaning fees (taxes can still be added). That makes comparing places much easier.

Warm-weather ideas
Hawaii in whale season
If you've ever wanted to see a humpback whale, winter break is the time. NOAA's Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary says about half of the North Pacific's humpbacks, thousands of animals, visit Hawaii each winter and spring, and that they're generally seen from November through April, with the peak from January through March. While they're in Hawaii, they focus on mating, calving and raising their young rather than feeding.
That means a late-December trip is at the early edge of the season, and a trip right after New Year's lands closer to the peak. Either way, a whale-watching boat or a lookout on shore can make a kid's whole year. Flights to Hawaii are long and popular over the holidays, so this is the trip where booking early matters most.

Florida and California theme parks dressed for the holidays
For families who want warm-ish weather plus a big dose of holiday sparkle, the theme parks are hard to beat. As of October 2026:
- Walt Disney World: EPCOT's Festival of the Holidays runs November 27 to December 30, 2026.
- Disneyland Resort: the holiday season runs November 13, 2026 to January 6, 2027.
- Universal Orlando: holidays run November 14, 2026 through January 3, 2027, with Christmas in all three Wizarding World areas.
Be ready for crowds around Christmas and New Year's, when many schools are out at the same time. Our full guide to Halloween and holiday events at Disney and Universal has the party dates and what's included, and our theme park strategy guide covers how to make a crowded day work with kids.
The desert Southwest
Winter is a lovely season in much of the desert Southwest, when hiking and exploring are pleasant instead of punishing. If you live in a cold place, a few days of sunshine, cactus and sunsets can feel like a very good trade. Check each park's own NPS page for winter hours and conditions, and pack layers: desert nights get cold.
Snowy ideas
Yellowstone in winter
Yellowstone in winter is a different park: steam, snow, bison with frosty backs and far fewer people. It also works differently, so plan carefully. The NPS road schedule shows oversnow travel opening December 15, 2026, with most interior roads open only to guided snowcoaches and snowmobiles through mid-March. The one road that stays open to regular cars all year runs from the North Entrance at Gardiner to the Northeast Entrance.
For families, that leaves two great options:
- Drive the northern road from Gardiner through the Lamar Valley, a classic area for spotting wildlife from the car.
- Book a snowcoach tour into the interior to see Old Faithful in the snow. They're guided, so someone else handles the snowy driving.
Winter tours and lodging inside the park are limited, so book early. Our national parks with kids guide covers passes and the free fourth-grade pass.
Arizona snow: Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon
Here in Arizona, snow is a short drive from the desert. Arizona Snowbowl near Flagstaff has a scheduled opening day of November 20, 2026, weather permitting, so it should be running well before winter break.

From Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon's South Rim is an easy add-on, and a snowy canyon is unforgettable. This year, though, in-park lodging on the South Rim is closed while the park repairs its water line, with a phased reopening projected after Thanksgiving. Our guide to the Grand Canyon with kids in fall and winter has the latest dates, kid-safe viewpoints and what to pack for ice.
Making a holiday trip work with kids
Traveling over the holidays is a little different from a summer trip. A few things that help:
- Plan around the holidays themselves. Many restaurants, attractions and stores have shorter hours or close on December 24, 25 and 31 and January 1. Check before you count on them, and have a grocery plan for those days.
- Bring Christmas with you. A small stocking for each child, a mini tree for the room, or a tradition you can do anywhere (a holiday movie, a special breakfast) keeps the trip from feeling like the holiday got skipped.
- Pack for two climates if you're flying from cold to warm or the reverse. Wear the coats on the plane.
- Keep one slow day. After big holiday travel days, kids need a reset. Our guide to planning around naps, meals and energy can help you build one in.
- Weather can change your plans. Winter storms delay flights and close roads. Choose refundable bookings where you can, and keep a list of indoor backups.
A quick winter break planning checklist
- Pick warm or snowy, and two or three destinations to compare
- Check every passport and adult ID now
- Set fare alerts this week; aim to book flights by mid-November
- Book a refundable place to stay
- Reserve tours, snowcoaches or park tickets that sell out
- Look up holiday hours for restaurants and attractions
- Make a packing list for every person, including holiday extras
The bottom line
Winter break 2026-27 has a friendly calendar, and the best prices on Christmas flights tend to show up between now and mid-November. Whether your family wants whales and sunshine or geysers and snow, start now and book the hard-to-get pieces first.
